Uttar Pradesh: government rolls back terminations after 72-hour strike
United forum of electricity employees and engineers forced a retreat after the 16–18 March strike, held under the threat of ESMA.
Electricity employees and engineers in Uttar Pradesh struck for 72 hours from 16 to 18 March 2023 under the banner of the Vidyut Karmachari Samyukt Sangharsh Samiti. The state had moved to terminate workers and walk back the December 2022 settlement, invoking ESMA.
The government rolled back the terminations. Demands placed in the strike included regularisation of contractual workers, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, and withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
EEFI and NCCOEEE called for nationwide solidarity, including letters to the Chief Minister and Energy Minister of Uttar Pradesh. A one-day token strike in Karnataka on 16 March, over a pending wage revision, ran on the same dates.
