The crucial role of women in the electricity sector

Women are half of society and a small part of electricity work, smaller still on the pole and in the union committee. Patriarchy, communal custom and the idea that the line is “men’s work” keep that gap in place.

Women already sit as sub-engineers and assistant engineers. Field cadres remain rare. Union membership is not the same as union voice. Pay, harassment and promotion will not move until women sit in the decision.

CITU asked every federation to raise working women’s participation. EEFI answered with the Working Women Subcommittee after the last national conference: identify the barriers, train cadres, place women in leadership, change standing orders and practice.

Recruit without the old stereotype. Flexible hours and parental leave where the work allows. Mentorship. Women’s committees that are not ornamental. Forums where women of generation, transmission and distribution speak to one another.

A public grid that excludes half the class is weaker than it looks. Organising working women is not a side task of this federation. It is organisation itself.
